„Tasty Treats“ - Of
animals
and their Eating Habits
This is the first exhibition or museum section in which a special master of ceremonies greets the visitor, no matter how large or small, young or old. Mr. Gulo Gulo has taken over the job. But he does not only welcome the visitors; he also acts as commentator for them as they wander through the
exhibition.
Alongside the first exhibits are three large dioramas containing herbivores (plant eaters), carnivores (meat eaters) and omnivores (both meat and plant eaters). Following this, the process of ingestion is discussed. There are filterers, swallowers, chewers, nectar-drinkers and animals with external digestion. The next section of the exhibition is also the largest. It covers a colourful mixture of topics and introduces the visitor to the various strategies animals use in their approach to obtaining food. We see various hunters, grazers, fruit collectors, wood eaters, cud chewers, energy wasters, hibernators, migrators, farmers and even those animals which fascinate visitors with their almost human-like eating habits. (Here the discussion is about chimpanzees and other primates, which pass on learned eating habits from generation to generation).
The exhibition combines an interesting mixture of topics with a colourful presentation. It goes without saying that this exhibit integrates the basic elements of the successful conception of the Museum of Man and Nature, namely the interactive participant terminals and exhibits. As Mr. Gulo asserts at the beginning of the tour: “I guarantee you’ll find something here to suit every taste”.
